Working from home is nothing new to BA/IT contractors like me. And most of the time it's my preference. However I have to say I'd rather be in the Prague, Stockholm and the Kuanas offices any day. For obvious reasons :-)

Oh you're right about sitting on the beach!

I meant more that if your mate had been a bit more careful about answering the call, he could have said "I'm working from my mum's" or whatever.

I work all over. I do actually do my work. But if someone came to knock on my door there's a good chance I'm working at my mum's or the local hotel lobby or Costa.

Re: Going back to work in the office
A few thoughts

1. People have been working from home or elsewhere since mobile phones came in. And in fact way before as they worked on projects at home in their non work time.
2. This became even more the case with email on phones and then what's app and messaging.
3. If an employee does what they are contracted to do who cares where they do it?
4. If they are able to do more than the contract then they obviously got the contract wrong.
5. If they are able to do more than the contract then what is the return on the extra work? I mean do they get a bonus or a share in profits?

Re: Going back to work in the office
They are also looking at where we log in from. No more going back to the uk and working remote, we have to be in our local jurisdiction. Not sure if that’s more security conscious , but whatever it’s taking more flexibility away

Well there kind of is Fifth if you work for the Government... you cant just go to the nearest pub/bookies and plug in your laptop... and too be honest having your work Iphone as an excuse whilst sunning yourself on the beach during core time is not really excuse... WFH should mean WFH.... not sitting on a beach with a dripping 99.

He was warned as were a few others...

Re: Going back to work in the office
We have been mandated to go back 3 days per week and they are tracking it. Anyone not complying is disciplined in some way. Apparently one of the senior MDs came to our brand new office building saw it empty and went berserk hence the mandate.

Unless there is a contractual obligation to work from a specific address then Im not sure that your mate's boss has a leg to stand on going around yo employees' homes.

I definitely am more productive in the office though. It's a, really nice office and usually almost empty so it's a great working environment. If it were busy I reckon I'd get less work done.

Re: Going back to work in the office
Grumps nailed it... if you're going to effectively give yourself a 5 grand pay rise by not having to commute every day, only reasonable to put in some additional time. If you don't and you take piss, you'll get summoned back.

No sympathy for anyone that does.

Re: Going back to work in the office
I'm a lazy bastard both at home or in the office so working from home is actually better for my company because they don't get the bad mood version when I'm at home.

My mates firm have just decided on a whim that they're dragging everyone back in five days a week. All the good people are leaving and nobody new wants to join, they're flirting with going out of business. Bit like fucking West Ham really.

"Several of my mates work stupid hours as the unofficial expectation is you work longer as you don't have to commute."

Sounds even worse tbh. Must give cunty management the mentality of "employee has eyes open therefore must work". Plus the commute is where a lot of people unwind/decompress after a rough day

Re: Going back to work in the office
The only people that complain about work from home are old people and landlords. Move with the times.

When I woke from home, I’ll gladly put in the extra hours, working my bollocks off. In the office, I’m out the door at five to ensure the commute and get away from the cunts in the office.

Ag, clockwise or anti clockwise or mix it up a bit for variety to make the day pass quicker?

Re: Going back to work in the office
My boss decided he didn’t want to hire anyone who worked remotely. Then they shut the office in his city. He’s shut up about it now.

Going into the office these days involves mostly using teams and zoom and then having to duck into phone rooms dozens of times to have conversations you don’t want everyone to hear.

Re: Going back to work in the office
Been to the office twice since march 2020, though go up for every social event as finish at 3.30 so perfect timing to get the train into fenchurch for 5.

Done 7.30 till 3.30 in the office with zero extea minutes and with a 6 pint lunch break on a Friday, but now do 6.30 til 4.00 with no lunch break, as basically sitting at home so don't need one and happily work the hours I used to be sitting bored on a train.

Even log on at the weekend if a partner needs something done.

I mean either work harder and stay at home saving £350 a month on travel or get called back in was my motto, so work harder it is.

Yeah, I know. Poor lady, that was a bloody tragedy. Unfortunately her story is the only high profile example of the WFH phenomenon I was referring to that is known to many people. I wish I could have used another.
